A new collaboration between the California Local News Fellowship and Distributed Media Lab will broaden distribution for stories reported by fellows who are currently reporting in more than 75 local news organizations throughout California. The project is funded by the Google News Initiative.
Using the Distributed Media Lab platform, a story written by a fellow in Fresno may appear in a San Diego or San Francisco publication, for example. The stories will be curated by Berkeley Journalism staff and made accessible through special collections, which include:
- California Local — a mix of statewide stories
- California Hive — environmental stories
- The Stakes — stories that investigate how federal executive orders and cuts are affecting California
These CA Local News Fellowship collections will showcase reporting from our fellows across the state, bringing diverse, community-driven reporting to a broader audience while complementing existing coverage.
These collections will be made available to local news organizations to embed on their websites, offering a new consumer experience, expanding audience engagement and broadening the impact of stories reported by the local news fellows.
Additional collections, featuring more topics or regional coverage, will be developed and offered as the project evolves.
Participating local news outlets can access the embeddable code for collections in the Distributed Media Lab Marketplace by navigating to the California section and selecting a collection from the list in that section. The Fellowship program staff and Distributed Media Lab will also be hosting information sessions and providing technical support.
