Dorothea Lange Fellowship

The fellowship, in memory of one of the 20th century's most outstanding documentary photographers, encourages the use of photography (black and white or color) in scholarly work of any discipline.

About the fellowship

The fellowship will be awarded to a UC Berkeley faculty member, a graduate student, or a senior who has been accepted for graduate work at Berkeley. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding work in documentary photography and a creative plan for future work.

Award and deadline

  • The selected fellow will receive $4,000.
  • Review the complete requirements before submitting your entry.
  • All materials must be submitted by 5pm (Pacific) on November 20th

Fellowship requirements

ALL SUBMISSIONS SHOULD MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fellowship application to include the following:
    • 5-7 examples of photographic work:
      • Submitted photos must all be jpg's at 300DPI, with the width no bigger than 10 inches.
      • jpegs must be titled lastname-firstname-1.jpg (sequential numbers in the order to be viewed).
    • A 200-400 word description of a proposed documentary photographic project, including its rationale and objectives, technical dimensions, starting and finishing dates, and locations.
    • A letter of recommendation, (scanned or uploaded) highlighting the applicant's scholarly and photographic interests and skills and the academic value of the project. For student applicants, the letter must be from a Berkeley faculty member who has agreed to supervise the project. (Fellowship committee members may not act as sponsors.)
  • Upon completion of the project, the fellow must submit the following to the fellowship committee. (The final $500 of the fellowship will be awarded once these materials are received):
    • A paper of at least 250 words summarizing the project
    • 2 archival prints (11"x14") to be donated to the permanent collection of the Bancroft Library, including rights to their future use to promote the fellowship in print and online.
    • 6-8 images (print or digital) for inclusion on the Dorothea Lange Fellowship web site, including rights to their future use to promote the fellowship.

Applicant workshop

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at 5:30 pm in the Rodriguez Room in North Gate Hall, Graduate School of Journalism.

All applicants are invited to attend this workshop, which will answer questions about how to prepare the applicant's work for submission.
